Yesterday, the boyfriend and I watched the national university cheerleading championships on television. He used to be a cheerleading instructor for the navy, and is particular about what he likes and what he does not like.
'You can make a good impact, even with minimal props, or simple costumes,' he says.
In his view, many of the teams didn't cut it, either in the dress or in the moves department. Having seen what he and his fellow instructors used to accomplish with naval cadets, I would have to agree. Their team used to win year after year.
Boyfriend Maiyuu gave excited commentary, about how the floats should be arranged, and what the young ones in the stands should do. When a well-coached team came on, the difference was noticeable. Too many teams gave prominence to the performers out front, while ignoring the quality of the floats and the students seated in the stands.
Maiyuu has not coached cheerleaders in a couple of years. I think it's time he started again. I used to enjoy our visits to the seaside.
