Backseat driver

A ride in a Thai taxi need never be the same again.

Thai gays who sell themselves for sex have infiltrated the ranks of taxi, tuk tuk, mini-van and motorcycle taxi drivers to look for customers, a seminar on sexuality was told.

These gays ask customers who themselves look as if they might be gay whether they would like sex.

Passengers can have sex for as little as B500. Some have it in the taxi itself, or the driver might suggest they go back to the passenger's place.

If they want something less than penetration - kissing, stroking, or the oral variety - the price can be as little as B300, says Chulalongkorn University doctorate student Saharot Kittimahacharoen.

Thai language newspapers yesterday carried details of his research findings, drawn from interviews and Thai gay webboards.

He says drivers start talking in general terms, then quickly move the conversation on to sex. The practice is particularly common among taxi drivers, who tend to go cruising (so to speak) when pubs approach closing time.

This group targets gay passengers to supplement their income, and because they think that having sex with men is likely to involve less complications than selling their bodies to women.

In his study, Saharot also finds that sexual preferences among Thai gays are changing. Where once they were into the pale-skinned, classic Thai look (noom tee), many are now turning their interest to more rugged, dark-skinned Esan types, especially if they work in the manual professions.

Builders, gardeners, labourers and security guards are popular. About 60-70 per cent of Thai gays writing on webboards about their sexual experiences, or fantasising about men, say they fancy men who do physical or rough work, because their bodies are leaner.

Many gays also want sex with 'real' men, and these types fit the bill. Gays tend to earn more than men who work in these professions. They can use their superior bargaining power to encourage such men to have sex.

Men who do physical work for a living also give rough sex, which - along with the smell of sweat on their bodies - many gays enjoy.

'Gays have turned to men who do physical work because they are tough. There's an element of the wild, raw thing, which fulfils gays who, by and large, enjoy force,' Saharot says.
