Powdered rice, Good Samaritan chucks it in, 7-11 couple with babe in arms

(file pic from the net - original lost)
Roasted rice, ground into powder, which serves as a thickening agent in northeastern-style Thai dishes, such as laab moo and yum.

Chef Maiyuu makes his own. He puts uncooked rice in a frypan and heats it on a stove. When it has browned, he puts it in the blender to turn it into the powder you see here.

Asked why he doesn’t simply use flour, he said the dish would change if he did.

‘For these Thai dishes, we have to use khaow kua (roasted rice). If we used flour, the dish would turn into something else.’

'Roasted' is a strange choice of word, I know, but it’s what the dictionary gives me.

The difference between ‘roasted’ rice and ordinary ‘fried’ rice is that fried rice has been boiled (khaow suey) before it hits the pan. Roasted rice (khaow kua) is raw rice, thrown on a saucepan with very little oil.

Reader Lance urges me to take Maiyuu to a dentist, and Ball to a doctor.

We have covered this ground before. I can but encourage these people to see to their own health needs; I can’t force them anywhere.

If Maiyuu wants to see a dentist, he’s welcome. He has more than enough money saved, but has to take the next step himself.

Similarly, if Ball wants to see a doctor, I am sure his family could find a way. His mother spent B10,000 trying to get him to finish secondary school with a leaving qualification - without success, he told us the other night. Ball wasn't interested in studying, so kept bunking class.

Where there’s a will, there’s a way...but if Ball lacks the will to take the next step himself, there’s nothing the rest of us can do to help.

I bumped in to Ball, his adopted baby sister, and girlfriend at the 7-11.

It was only midday, which was shockingly early for Mr Ball to be up and about.

I was surprised to find him there. It’s not often that I see his pale figure in daylight.

Ball was carrying his baby sister in his arms. His girlfriend, Jay, looked as proud as punch.

Here they were, just like a real husband, wife and doting child out together for a quick jaunt to the local convenience store.

‘What are you doing today?’ I asked.

‘I have no work to do, so will probably spend the day at home,’ he said.

About 11pm, I called carer R. He was manning his ya dong stand.

Mr Ball, and one other regular customer were there. The ya dong had run out, so they had started drinking something else.

R handed the phone straight to Ball, who invited me to call over on my way home from work.

I declined, as I preferred the idea of a quiet hour or two with the boyfriend before bed, rather than in the company of late-night boozers in the slum.

Bk, l agree with you. Whilst l find the whole Ball and family situation frustrating, hence the lack of posts, you can advise, you could even pay but you cannot and have no right to force anyone to do something they dont want to do. Even if you know it's the right thing to do!
Glad to hear Maiyuu came first this time. ;)
    Love to you both

I disagree with the Reader Lance who asked you to take Maiyuu to a dentist and Ball to a doctor.

For Maiyuu, he has already saved enough money ( it's your money ), therefore he has to go to the dentist by himself if he wanted his dental problem fixed. You have done your part ( the money part ), the rest is up to him. Maiyuu is already 30++, let him handle this dental problem himself. Give him the opportunity to be independant. If he still doesn't want to go the dentist, then just let him suffers when the problem gets worse.

As for Ball, he has his family to take care of him. As a casual friend, you have done enough for him. By the way, what's wrong with Ball's health ?

Hello, Andrew. Thanks for your comments. Fostering independence is a fine thing, I agree, but I have no choice in the matter anyway.

I can't drag them to these places; ultimately it is up to them.

As for Ball, he has some kind of STV, which he refuses to treat. It may not be serious, but he should probably get it checked nonetheless.

I will touch this subject only once because i do understand that you cannot force a person to see a doctor.

But on the otherhand I believe that you are very capable of achieving your goals. I have an idea: Show maiyu the you tube sight with the video "abcess tooth" its gross! the infected one puts pressure on the area and puss shoots out. THAT GOT MY FRIEND TO THE DENTIST tell him thats next if he ignores his teeth.

Try to convince Mr Ball that disease doesnt heal on its own. Tell him that impotence among other serious consequences are waiting. You can go to clinic ...together...maybe lunch with view river..or promise another family outing.

I do believe that you are resourceful..please try ....i beg to differ...all std are serious!! n

If BKK was making out with drippy dome Ball, maybe BKK should see a doctor too. Sounds like gonorrhea.

Agreed that if Maiyu has infected cavities, he should be made to see a dentist. Maybe he is insecure that it is really ok to spend the money on this. Infections in teeth can spread to the bone and brain. How cheap are drillings and amalgam fillings? Not to mention regular use of a toothbrush? Though root canals if needed may be expensive, still in Thailand, how expensive could it be? How bad are Maiyuu's teeth?

Could it be Maiyuu is afraid of going to the Dentist?
l should have gone last October but l keep putting it off because l'm terrified of what they might do even though l have good teeth. Maybe Maiyuu is nervous!

Lance: Ball is indeed worried that impotetence will result from his untreated STD, if that's what it is. I will talk to him about it.

I will also talk to Maiyuu again about his teeth (for the 100th time), and see what he says.

Anon: I have not 'made out' with Ball, as you put it.

Looking after teeth is inexpensive. Maiyuu has enough money to make a decent start, at least, but would rather put it off.

His teeth are a smoker's brown and don't look too good. Occasionally they rot and just fall out of his head.

Wilks: I suspect fear of the dentist is part of it. I have offered to escort him, but he is not interested.
