New Year wrap-up

The New Year's festival was getting old even before the bombs went off on New Year's Eve. Where in the West people tend to celebrate on the night, then clean up the next day, here the celebrations just keep going.

In the market where I live, Thais have partied every night since Dec 31. Their homes go quiet during the day, as they recover from the previous night's excesses, only to wind up again in the evening. Their enthusiasm to party, and the money supply, seem never-ending.

Each year, the folk along the railway line next to my place hang up tinsel and fairy lights outside their homes, and hire a karaoke machine, which they position outwards facing each other's homes, so everyone can hear it.

Today, I see the karaoke machine has finally left. Only the tinsel and lights remain.
