I met my partner Maiyuu shortly after I moved to this country, while I was staying at a hostel close to work. At the time Maiyuu and his friend Duck were working in a lunch restaurant on the ground floor. I walked in one day, after initially avoiding the place, thinking it looked too expensive.
The owner was a young man about my age, which is saying something in Bangkok, where everyone seems under the 30 mark. He introduced me to his staff, and one day asked if Maiyuu, the young man who would become my boyfriend, could stay with me in my room.
'He travels in to work a long way every day, and if he moved in with you he could get more sleep, and you would have someone to help you and keep you company,' he said.
Move in he did, and soon after we moved our belongings again to my present place on the outskirts of town. His friend Duck was already living there with a Spanish boyfriend, and Maiyuu no doubt wanted to be close to his friend.
I suspect another reason he urged me to move out there was to keep me away from money-hungry boys hanging around Silom, some of whom I had already met during my brief stay.
Actually, before we moved, I had entertained idea of living closer to town. I liked the look of a low-rise apartment block in Sathorn, where a colleague from work stayed. He had been there 10 years, and was happy.
The place had its own pool, and the rooms were large, with a kitchen and bath. I inspected the place and, impressed, paid a B10,000 deposit on a room. Maiyuu, however, refused to move in, claiming the place looked old. I apologised to the owner, but she did not give me back my deposit.
Maiyuu was not pleased that I paid the deposit without telling him first, and insisted I give him my ATM card for safekeeping, which I meekly did.
He's held it ever since.
