Valentine's Day cop-out

Maiyuu and I have decided to put off exchanging Valentine's Day gifts until pay day tomorrow.

We are making a principled stand, because we have no money.

On this day every year, many young Thais (according to surveys ) expect to hit the sheets.

Valentine's Day, which is a big event here, is billed as a day of romance, when lovers buy each others flowers or chocolates, and expect some reward in return.

Thais, sniffed one newspaper, don't know the history behind Valentine's Day, and overlook local customs and religion as they adopt western ways without question.

They are unaware, the report said, that Valentines Day cards or presents are traditionally sent by anonymous admirers. They do not know that St Valentine was rumoured to be a Christian martyr in Roman times, who died for his cause. Where's the romance in that?

According to the mystery which surrounds this annual festival, Valentine was a bishop living in Italy around 270AD, who secretly married off couples at a time when the populace was told to stop having families and go to war instead. By another account, he was jailed by Claudius II, but fell in love with the prison boss's daughter, leaving her sweet epistles signed off, 'From your Dear Valentine'.

Thais don't know about that, the newspaper said. They just want sex. The government has published a survey which says 90,000 Thai teens have Aids.

'If you have to make love, it would be safer to love yourself as a person than go out looking for sex,' said the health minister.

Girls who see a bunch of roses should think twice before losing their virginity to the young man who sent them, he said.

So - a quiet night in, then? Maiyuu and I plan just that. But we're old. We can do such things now, without feeling guilty.

The culture police should thank us. We're being righteous, and setting a good example - though if we had money, who knows how naughty we could be.
